A Sweet Legacy at the Adelaide Central Market

For generations, The Old Lolly Shop has been Adelaide’s go-to destination for traditional sweets, bringing nostalgia and delight to locals and visitors alike. Nestled in Stall 33 at the Adelaide Central Market, our store carries a rich history dating back to the 1800s, when the art of confectionery was a true craft.

Now under the care of Georga & Simon Williams, The Old Lolly Shop continues to honor its past while embracing the future—ensuring every customer experiences the joy of old-fashioned treats.

The Blackeby's

It all began in 1883, when 14-year-old William Blackeby became South Australia’s first registered confectionery apprentice. He trained under Thomas Ransley, whose market stall became the birthplace of a legacy that would span generations. William later took ownership of the stall, pioneering new confectionery techniques and introducing iconic sweets like humbugs, acid drops, peanut brittle, and coconut ice—all still loved today.

Through the Blackeby family, the business thrived, with each generation adding to its legacy. The stall became a market staple, enduring world wars, economic shifts, and even fires, yet never losing its charm. By the late 20th century, the business changed hands, but its commitment to handcrafted sweets remained.

In 1997, Andrea and Darren Lomas took over, maintaining the stall’s rich traditions and deep connection to the Central Market community.

Fast forward to 2025, and a new chapter begins. Georga Williams, who worked at the stall during her university years, couldn’t shake her love for the market and the magic of its sweets. Now, alongside her husband Simon, she is proud to continue The Old Lolly Shop’s legacy—keeping tradition alive while creating new memories for the next generation of sweet lovers.
